Shiva, regarded as the representation of the supreme being is shown here sat on a tiger skin. He is the destroyer; through him the cycle of life is able to be continued.
His half-open eyes show that the cycle of the universe is in process. When his eyes are completely closed it signifies the dissolvent of the universe and when they are fully open a new cycle of creation begins.
In Hindu mythology, the tiger is the vehicle of Shakti, the Goddess of power and force. Shiva is beyond and above any kind of force and is therefore the master of Shakti. Sitting on the tiger skin is symbolic of his victory over force.
He carries a three branced trident; this symbolizes the three fundamental powers of will, action and knowledge. As a weapon the trident represents the instrument of punishment to the evil doer on all the three planes - spiritual, subtle and physical.
