Product Description

In this image of Kali, we see her in the pose of Daksinakali, dancing her victory dance, after slaying the demon Raktabija. Under her feet is her consort and counterpart, Shiva.

Kali is is associated with darkness, death, and destruction, but she can also represent renewal and cleansing as well as motherhood and time. She is a fierce goddess and a formidable warrior.

The most famous of Kali's stories tells of how Durga and her assistants attempt to kill the demon Raktabija, but the wounds they have inflicted only cause him to bleed and every drop of his blood turns into a cloned form of Raktabija. The battlefield is soon filled with his duplicates and Durga summons Kali to fight them. Kali emerges from Durga's forehead (it is also said that Durga takes the form of Kali in such situations) and proceeds to destroy Raktabija by sucking the blood from his body and swallowing all his duplicates.

Once she has slain her enemy, Kali becomes drunk on the blood she has consumed and dances in a frenzy of victory. In her mania, she does not notice that Shiva, her husband, is among the corpses on whom she treads. His cries finally calm her and bring Kali out of her intoxicated state.

Rainbow batiks are hand-printed and painted.

Please note that as this is a hand finished product, colours may vary from those pictured

Due to the nature of the hand printing techniques used in India, there may be natural variations in design and some double printing may occur, however this does not detract from the beautiful finish of this batik.
