Lord Ganesh is Shiva's son, and is one of the most important deities in the Hindu religion. He is the protector of books, and knowledge and the remover of obstacles.
This beautifully hand carved wooden statue depicts an image of Lord Ganesh. He was created when Parvathi, Shiva's wife needed someone to watch out for her as she bathed. She carved a beautiful boy from a piece of sandalwood, and using water from the holy river Ganges, gave him life. He was entrusted with guarding over her.
The boy Ganesha refused to step aside even for Shiva, and in his rage Shiva cut off the boy's head. When he saw his wife's sorrow, Shiva realised that this boy was his son. He ordered his soldiers to go out and kill the first animal they came across, and bring back the head. The returned with the head of an elephant, and Shiva used this head to bring the boy back to life.
Images of Ganesh should always be placed facing a door in order to guard from evil.
