Hanuman is one of the most important figures of the Ramayana, an ancient Sanskrit scripture. Legend has it that he was born to lead battles against evil forces, most notably the demon King Ravana.
According to the Ramayana, Hanuman was born to Anjana, a female vanara. Anjana was an apsara or a celestial being, who, due to a curse, was born on the earth as a female vanara (a race of ape-like humanoids). The curse was to be removed upon her giving birth to an incarnation of Lord Shiva.
