Buddha sits in deep meditation, on a cushion in the shape of the lotus flower - a symbol of spiritual purity. His hands are in the position of the Vitarka Mudra, the gesture of discussion and transmission of Buddhist teaching.
Buddha sits in the lotus posture which is the most conducive to concentration. He breathes calmly, at one with the Universe. Buddha is an enlightened being.
Here he is depicted preaching the first sermon in the Deer Park to the five monks who had previously renounced him. Hearing his enlightened sermon, the monks became convinced of the truth and became the first five "perfected ones" in his order.
Please note that as this is a hand finished product, colours may vary from those pictured
Due to the nature of the hand printing techniques used in India, there may be natural variations in design and some double printing may occur, however this does not detract from the beautiful finish of this batik.
