Batik - Saraswati on Rock

Saraswati is the Goddess of pure knowledge and wisdom. She guides our learning paths and is very popular among scholars, artists, scientists and teachers. Saraswati teaches us that knowledge should always be used to help fellow beings and for the good of the world we live in.

Saraswati is often seen as the Divine consort of Lord Brahma - the Creator of the universe. She is typically pictured with four arms, holding symbolic items. The book symbolises intellect, the mala (prayer beads) represents concentration, meditation and union with God and the lute (or veena) indicates that Saraswati is in tune with the physical world as well as the astral world, which is what we should aspire towards being.

In this picture, Saraswati has a peacock near her feet. The peacock is a fickle creature and prone to unpredictability. He waits for Saraswati and wants her to use him as a vehicle, but Saraswati has already chosen her vehicle - the swan. In contrast to the peacock, the swan has a highly sensitive power of discretion - it knows pure from impure, right from wrong and always make the right choice. It is for this reason that Saraswati elects to travel with the swan and not the peacock. This symbolises that we need to overcome fears and indecisions.

Rainbow batiks are hand-printed and painted. Rainbow batiks are approximately 2.5 ft by 4 ft.
