Tara's origins are in Hinduism or Yoga. She later became adopted into Buddhism. Tara represents virtuous and enlightened action. She is the Goddess of universal compassion.
In Buddhist tradition, it is said that the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara wept as looked upon the world of suffering beings. His tears created a lake in from which a lotus flower sprung. Tara was revealed when the lotus flower opened.
Tara is believed to help her followers overcome dangers, fears and anxieties. She is worshipped for her ability to overcome the most troublesome of situations. Green Tara is intensely compassionate and acts quickly to help those who call upon her.
