Batik - Buddha under Bodhi Tree

Siddhartha Guatama, the founder of Buddhism, attained enlightenment after days of meditation under the Bodhi Tree. In this hand-painted batik, we see the representation of Buddha in total serenity.

Buddhism began some 500 years BC. Siddartha Guatama, an Indian Prince who had been sheltered from all suffering since birth, decided to leave his kingdom one day in search of the truth. After many different attempts to reach his goal, Siddhartha decided to go into deep solitary contemplation. He chose the peaceful shade of the Bodhi Tree and remained there for several days and nights. During this time, the evil forces of Mara tried to tempt him and distract him away from his meditation. Nothing disturbed him and he emerged as an enlightened being.

Siddhartha was followed by many people, including his family, who saw that he was in true universal harmony. Siddhartha became known as Guatama Buddha. He taught love and acceptance to his followers, who were from every race and class. He gave them ideas by which to live but also said that everyone should find his own way to realise these conclusions, ie we shouldn't follow something simply because we are told to do so, we should follow something because we believe it to be right.

Buddhism now exists in most countries around the world.

Due to the nature of the hand printing techniques used in India, there may be natural variations in design and some double printing may occur, however this does not detract from the beautiful finish of this batik.
